![]() ![]() I know you rebuild 020 transmissions, but do you have any recommendations for the 02J? I was thinking of going with these guys because they replace the differential rivets with bolts, and it looks like they do a good job. I'm driving my wife's misfiring Jetta to work for the time being (I need to check the coilpacks). And as I wrote on the other thread, it's sitting in the driveway. I can go check to see if the metal bits are all steel or if there is some aluminum there, just for kicks, but I'm ready to replace the transmission as soon as I save up the money. I refilled the transmission with synthetic 75W90 and drove around the block.only to discover that most of the new oil came right out of the right shaft seal.ĭid I destroy my transmission by trying to fix the loose counterweight or was there some other problem that, out of sheer coincidence, happened around the same time? I'm getting ready to remove the transmission (the car is just sitting on jack stands in the driveway).should I check that little VW cap with the 13mm bolts first?" A few weeks later I started smelling something, so I unscrewed the transmission drain plug and only a couple of drops of oil came out, along with a handful of metal bits. There was a rusted nut holding it down that didn't engage the structure of the counterweight, so I dropped a couple of washers on the post to fill the gap, then tightened the nut back down, and the weight stayed rigid. "When I bought my GTI in August the counterweight was wobbling all over the place, so I took a closer look. The first is: did I break it? I posted this on a thread I found regarding the shifter counterweight: Is it dead? (Broke)Īlright! Thank you so much for the reply. Re: 1.8T O2J transmission whines and leaks. It will not fix itself, and it will most likely continue to just get worse. The bottom line? It needs opened and repaired, or written off and driven until dead. Continued driving could very well lead to a hole in the casing, if there isn't one already. if not, then you have loose steel being spun inside against the aluminum casing. Was it a mix of steel and aluminum? See if it all sticks to a magnet. The curved pieces are too big for a circlip I think, but they do resemble a thrust washer. ![]() I don't know the 02A/J trans very well at all, and it is hard to see what they are with oil on them. ![]() It is hard for me to say what pieces those are. The grinding noise you hear unless you press the clutch is the input shaft spinning and causing the nasty noise. Those are big pieces, you have something major letting go inside. You can decide to have it rebuilt, if so, stop driving it. You can call it dead and drive it until it fails 100%. Quote, originally posted by toastforbrekkie » Best I can tell it's coming from the right side shaft seal (the longer shaft). Got it back to the driveway and the brand new gear oil was flowing out. Now it almost sounds like grinding with the clutch out. About two teaspoons of oil came out, along with a handful of metal. I finally got a 17mm hex bit, found the fill and drain plugs on the O2J, and drained the case. Oil level is fine, recently changed to Mobil 1 with new filter. Checked the oil level, and the dipstick broke. Still, there was oil on top of the transmission. I replaced the coolant flange last month so I thought it might be leaking again, but it was dry. it increases in pitch with higher speeds. It was loud in second and third, but audible in any gear, or even in neutral with the clutch out. Broke, I hope you see this and weigh in.Ī couple weeks ago I noticed a whine in my 2003 GTI 1.8T with the clutch engaged. This is probably a stupid question, but I thought I'd ask anyway. ![]()
